Project Description
Corymbia citriodora ‘Lemon Essence’
At Botanix, Lemon-Scented Gums would have to be one of our favourite trees.
The scent of these gums is instantly recognisable even well beyond their natural range of Northern NSW into Queensland. They are a tree that is grown Australia-wide for good reason.
The highly celebrated and majestic driveway planting at Dame Elizabeth Murdoch’s Cruden Farm is a testament to their place as a classic Australian tree.
Corymbia citriodora ‘Lemon Essence’
‘Lemon Essence’ is a select grafted form of the ever-popular Lemon-Scented Gum.
At 6m to 8m high with a similar sized crown, the compact mature size of Corymbia citriodora ‘Lemon Essence’ makes it perfect for space-restricted sites or where all the desirable characteristics of Lemon-Scented Gums are required however without the size or fear of branch-drop.
Developed by native plant expert, Phillip Vaughan and trialed for more than a decade, ‘Lemon Essence’ has proven itself to be is a reliable performer.
Like ‘Scentuous’ which is another smaller growing and grafted form, ‘Lemon Essence’ features a smooth powdery white trunk which sometimes has a pearlescent quality. The bark exfoliates with a pink blush through summer.
The foliage is broad and softly weeping which takes on a graceful appearance especially in a light breeze. Furthermore the leaves of ‘Lemon Essence’ retain the strong, characteristic lemon scent of this majestic tree.
Green buds develop exuberantly through summer into white flowers. Corymbia citriodora ‘Lemon Essence’ attracts both native insects and birdlife to the landscape.
Unlike the more upright growth of ‘Scentuous’, the habit of Corymbia citriodora ‘Lemon Essence’ is rounded, with a balanced crown coming early while still maintaining a straight trunk beneath. Because of this uniform habit and predictable mature size, ‘Lemon Essence’ is an appropriate choice for both domestic and commercial uses. In the public domain, the tree has incredible potential in parkland and street plantings.
